Glossary

A game console is an interactive entertainment computer that generates a video signal, which could be given as input to a display unit like computer monitor, television, etc to display the game. And the game consoles include joystick, and many other controllers which are used to interact with the game controls. The following are some of the glossary terms that are related to games consoles.

Atari Flashback 2:
The Atari Flashback 2 was released in 2005. It has been integrated with 40 Atari 2600 games. Atari Flashback 2 has been designed with 5 control buttons and 2 joysticks. These joysticks are compatible with each other and thus, they are interchangeable. But they are not provided with paddle controllers, though they could be connected with original paddle controllers.

Evo: Phase One:
Evo Phase one game consoles was released in 2008 and it belongs to 7th generation of game consoles. It uses linux operating system and was designed using Fedora. This Evo: phase one comes with 2 built in games. And the most important feature of this console is that, it supports High Definition, Internet access, etc. Since it has been provided with internet access, it allows you to play Windows games.

FC Twin:
FC Twin most commonly called as FC X2, has been integrated with 2 built in games. And they are Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Game Wave:
A Game Wave is a combination of a DVD Player and a Video Game Console that was released on 2005. And it belongs to the 7th generation game consoles. The majority of the games integrated with Game Wave were trivia based and it was aimed mainly at family based markets. The Game Wave is designed in such a way that it can be connected up to six controllers.

Generation NEX:
Generation NEX was released in 2005 and it was designed to play many of the games that are developed for NES systems. This game console is designed in such a way that it supports both the famicom 60 pin and NES 72 pin cartridges. It has been designed with built in wireless technology to play with wireless controllers.

Gizmondo:
Gizmondo was developed by Tiger Telematics and it was released in 2005. And the product was discontinued in the year 2006.

iPod Touch:
iPod Touch is a portable device that was launched in 2007 by Apple Inc. It is portable media player, PDA, and IEEE 802.11 enabled product. It has been designed with multi touch graphical user interface. And it is the first iPod with wireless access that enables users to directly download the content from the App Store.

Mattel Hyper scan:
Mattel Hyper Scan was developed by Mattel. It uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology with the conventional video game technology. This game console is targeted towards kids between ages 5 to 9. This system comes in 2 different versions. A cube box version and the 2 player value pack.

Nintendo DS:
This is a game console that was developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was released in 2004. It includes many features like built in microphone, Wi–Fi, touch screen, etc.

Pandora:
Pandora game console was developed by Open Pandora and it takes advantage of the open source software. It includes many of the advanced features that no other handheld game consoles have previously had.

Phantom:
Phantom is a controversial game console that is capable of playing PC games (current and the future). The system gives huge library that enables the game developers to develop games for this system. The system is designed in such a way that it use direct download content delivery system rather than the traditional discs and cartridges that are used in many of the game consoles.

PlayStation 3:
PlayStation 3 usually abbreviated as PS3 was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment and it is the successor of PlayStation 2. PlayStation 3 is considered as the strong competitor of Microsoft’s Xbox 360. PlayStation 3 comes under the 7th generation of game consoles. The major features that are included in PlayStation 3 are online gaming, networking of PlayStation, etc.

PlayStation 3 Slim:
This is the redesigned model of PlayStation 3 and this is the only model that is under production. It has been provided with 250 GB of hard drive and it is 33 % smaller and 36 % when compared to the PlayStation 3. This model has become more popular among the people and created a revolution in the market of game consoles.

PlayStation Portable:
PlayStation portable is a handheld game console that is manufactured by Sony. It was released in 2004 and it is the first handheld game console to use optical disc format for storage. The major features that are included with this game console are its large video display, and its connectivity with other game consoles like PlayStation 3, Internet, etc.

Wii:
Wii is a home game console that was released in 2006. It belongs to the 7th generation of game console and it is a strong competitor of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The distinguishable features that are included in Wii are wireless controller, Wii Remote, etc. Wii Remote could be used as the pointing device and it is capable of detecting the movements in three dimensions.

Xbox 360:
Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and it is the second game console product from Microsoft. It belongs to the seventh generation of game console and it was considered as one of the strong competitor of Wii and PlayStation 3. Xbox 360 has been integrated with Xbox live that enables the user to download games, music, movies, trailers, game demos, etc.

Zeebo:
Zeebo is a game console that is developed by Zeebo Inc. It is designed in such a way that there are no cartridges and DVDs. Instead the games and other contents are downloaded via broadband networks wirelessly. This game console is currently available only in Brazil and Mexico. Zeebo game console is not only targeted towards games. Adding to games, it also enables users to access educational content via electronic mail, social networking, etc.
